The Coal shed is a proposal for the renovation of a small building which has served to function as the working arm of the big house in a variety of guises; a stable, a goal shed, a garage, a garden, a dumping ground. Throughout its history the building has oscillated within its envelope, serving whatever function was required of it as the landscape around it shifted and changed, from pastoral land through to low density housing. The design seeks to clearly articulate the relationship between the material addition and the existing building fabric. Within this proposal is an attempt to create nooks and crannies, not only for people, but also for plants and animals, and so remembering some of the buildings historic purpose.
The proposal achieved planning permission but ultimately remains unbuilt.
